The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled its new Mental Health Action Plan, with a primary focus on ensuring the well-being of athletes and fostering psychologically safe environments. This comprehensive strategy is designed to serve as a roadmap for the IOC’s efforts to promote mental wellness across its four spheres of responsibility – as an organisation, as the owner of the Olympic Games, as the leader of the Olympic Movement, and in relation to Olympism in society.
The action plan encompasses five key thematic areas, each with specific objectives and actions that are targeted for completion by the end of 2026:
- Culture and Leadership: The IOC aims to lead by example, championing a policy environment that recognizes the critical importance of mental health and well-being. By fostering a culture of support and understanding, they seek to create an atmosphere where athletes’ mental health is a top priority.
- Measurement and Research: Recognizing the need for evidence-based approaches, the IOC is committed to contributing to more comprehensive and reliable mental health epidemiology among elite athletes and under-researched groups. Attention will be given to cross-cultural differences to ensure impactful initiatives.
- Reduce Prevalence and Improve Well-being: The IOC will continue developing expert-led tools and initiatives to enhance mental health literacy, reduce stigma, build mental resilience, and address sport-specific stressors that can impact athletes’ mental health and overall well-being.
- Improve Care: Creating psychologically safe athletic environments is a priority for the IOC. They aim to reduce barriers to seeking help, promoting early recognition of when additional support may be needed, and establishing clear pathways to care for athletes in need.
- Improve Access to Sport: Recognizing the mental health benefits that people and communities gain from participating in sports and embracing Olympism in Society, the IOC is dedicated to promoting and supporting access to sports, particularly in resource-limited settings. This commitment contributes to the overarching goal of Olympism365.
Through this Mental Health Action Plan, the IOC is taking significant steps towards prioritizing the mental well-being of athletes and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within the world of sports. By addressing these key thematic areas, the IOC aims to set a new standard for mental health awareness and support in the sporting community.
