Seven exceptional individuals have been unveiled as the latest inductees into the prestigious Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF), marking a significant moment in the nation’s sporting history.
The 2023 inductees comprise esteemed athletes and a visionary coach, all of whom have made a lasting impact on the sports scene within Australia and beyond. Their unparalleled achievements have etched their names in the annals of Australian sporting glory.
Among the honourees are Kim Brennan AM, an iconic figure in rowing with numerous Olympic medals; Tim Cahill AO, the only Socceroo to feature in four FIFA World Cups; Kurt Fearnley AO, a Paralympic powerhouse with multiple golds; Lydia Lassila OAM, an Olympic champion in aerial skiing; Johnathan Thurston AM, a prominent rugby league figure; Nova Peris OAM, the first Indigenous Australian to secure an Olympic gold medal; and Tim McLaren OAM, a distinguished rowing coach.
These distinguished individuals will be celebrated at a special event hosted by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on October 16.
The SAHOF is a prestigious institution that boasts an impressive roster of sporting legends, including Sir Donald Bradman AC, Cathy Freeman OAM, and Rod Laver AC MBE. Those granted membership embody the epitome of sporting achievement, characterized by integrity, ambition, and pride.
To attain membership in the Athlete category of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, individuals must have reached the highest echelons of their respective sports. In 2023, six former sporting greats join as Athlete Members, while one is inducted as a General Member. Athletes are eligible for consideration four years after retirement.
In addition, two existing members will be elevated to the distinguished status of Legend of Australian Sport at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Award luncheon on October 16. To be considered for this honour, members must have been retired for a minimum of 15 years.
The induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame is a recognition of excellence and exceptional contributions to sports in the country. Nominations are open to the public and are carefully evaluated by the Selection Committee, ensuring that only the most deserving individuals join the elite ranks of Australian sporting heroes.
