Preparations for the 15th edition of the Australian Masters Games, to be held in Adelaide in October 2015, have accelerated with the appointment of Nic Mercer as Games General Manager.

As the program manager of the Australian men’s basketball team, Mercer oversaw the team’s Beijing and London Olympic campaigns, as well as the Melbourne Commonwealth Games campaign; Mercer also managed the international basketball farewell series prior to the London Olympics in 2012.

More recently Mercer has been based in Italy as director of his company Podium Partners, which assists Australian athletes and teams in Europe via strategic consulting, operational and logistical support and athlete monitoring.

Confederation of Australian Sport announced the appointment of Mercer, who is returning from Italy to his home town to take up the role.

“We are pleased to welcome Nic Mercer on board as the General Manager for 2015 Australian Masters Games to be held in Adelaide,” said Confederation of Australian Sport chief executive officer Rob Bradley.

“Nic has a long career in events and the national sporting system heading up the Australian men’s basketball program as Program Manager at Basketball Australia at two Olympic Games and the management and hosting of a number of international basketball events in Australia,” Bradley continued.

Mercer is looking forward to the challenge saying, “I’m excited to be part of the Australian Master Games team. This is one of Australia’s largest participation events that highlights Australian’s love of sport. Adelaide has a long successful tradition of hosting this event and I look forward to the challenge of making the 15th Australian Masters Games a memorable experience for all involved.”

Mercer will commence on 9th April, and will be joined by Aaron Humphries who takes up the role of Sport Manager for the 15th Australian Masters Games.

Humphries comes from a strong swimming background, with recent roles including Event Operations Manager at Swimming Australia and key sport competition roles at both the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships held in Dubai in 2010, and 12th FINA World Swimming Championships held in Doha in 2012.

Rounding out the Games staff management team is marketing and communications agent Jump Media & Marketing, who return after a successful marketing and communications campaign activation for the 14th Australian Masters Games in Geelong last year.

One of Australia’s premier and largest mass participation sporting events, the Australian Masters Games is and is set to attract over 8,000 participants across over 50 sports when it returns to its “spiritual home” in South Australia in 2015, providing a multi-million dollar boost to the local economy. It will be the sixth time the biennial event has been held in South Australia.
