The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to supporting the dreams of young Tasmanian athletes by introducing a new program that will financially assist those selected to compete in interstate sporting events.
The Junior Travel Assistance Fund will provide young Tasmanians aged 12-18, who have been selected to represent their state in a national championship or event, with a one-off grant of $250 to help ease the financial burden for families.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, emphasized that every young Tasmanian with an ambition to represent their state in their chosen sport should have the opportunity to do so:
“I receive requests on a weekly basis for financial assistance from young Tasmanian athletes who have been selected in a representative side and are facing hefty costs to travel interstate and compete at a national championship or event,” he said.
“We want more Tasmanians to get active, no matter where they live, what their age or their circumstances, and we are investing significantly into the State’s sport and recreation sector to make this possible.”
The government’s investment in this initiative is a testament to their commitment to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among young people. Minister Street highlighted the many positive impacts sport can have on a young person’s life, including improving resilience, enhancing social development, and encouraging social connectedness.
The Junior Travel Assistance Fund is a tangible example of the government’s investment in the State’s sport and recreation sector, ensuring that more Tasmanians have the opportunity to participate in sports, no matter where they live, what their age or their circumstances.
The program guidelines and eligibility for the Junior Travel Assistance Fund will be made available in the coming weeks, with applications expected to open in May. This is an exciting opportunity for young Tasmanian athletes to pursue their dreams and represent their state on a national stage, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this initiative will have on our young people.
