The Change Our Game Women in Sports Broadcasting Program is a unique initiative designed to support women who are keen to forge a career in sports media and broadcasting. Through the program, participants will acquire the essential knowledge and skills required to progress their career in the industry.
The program’s successful pilot in 2020 saw 56 participants from Victoria pursue their broadcasting dreams. Following its triumph, an Extension Program was introduced in 2021-22, providing participants with an opportunity to further enhance their skills.
In 2022-23, the program offers two streams:
Stream 1 – Introductory Stream is for individuals who are either looking to commence or are in the early stages of a career in sports broadcasting.
Stream 2 – Extension Stream is suitable for previous graduates of the Change Our Game Women in Sports Broadcasting Program Introductory course, seeking to progress their media and broadcasting skills to the next level, or for non-graduates with exceptional relevant experience in sports media and broadcasting and/or sport industry knowledge.
Each stream includes a full-day face-to-face workshop led by Making The Call, featuring experienced broadcasters Emma Race and Lucy Race. The Introductory Stream workshop will take place on Tuesday, 30 May 2023, while the Extension Stream workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, 13 June 2023, both to be held in Melbourne.
The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation and Making The Call are thrilled with the outstanding achievements of the Program’s graduates to date. The Program has opened up doors of opportunities and connections for its participants, which are critical in the highly competitive sports media landscape.
One inspiring story from the 2021-22 Introductory Program is Pokuah Frimpong, who currently hosts a podcast called Radio Dub. Pokuah interviews A-League Women’s players and discusses the league. Her outstanding skills have also been recognized by Network 10 and Paramount Plus, where she provided commentary on the A-League Women.
Applications from women from targeted or under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Change Our Game Women in Sports Broadcasting Program is a remarkable initiative that is set to have a profound impact on women aspiring to pursue a career in sports media and broadcasting. By providing participants with the essential skills, knowledge, and connections, this program is empowering women to take on leadership roles and make significant contributions to the sports media landscape.
This initiative reflects a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, which are essential for creating a more inclusive and representative sports media industry.
