The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have joined forces with over 100 organizations worldwide to establish a global alliance dedicated to promoting physical activity. The alliance, known as the Hamburg Declaration, represents a collective commitment to take necessary actions to increase physical activity levels and enhance the overall health of individuals and communities.
Comprising 139 medical and scientific organizations, along with sport and government bodies, the Hamburg Declaration aligns with the ASC’s strategic goal of encouraging greater sports participation at all levels and advocating for the positive impact of sports in Australia.
AIS Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David Hughes, was one of the authors of the declaration and expressed his support for the initiative. He emphasized the significance of physical activity as not just a healthy lifestyle habit but also a proven medical intervention in combating various non-communicable diseases. Dr. Hughes highlighted the potential for improving quality of life measures, particularly related to physical and mental health, and acknowledged the substantial economic impact that increasing physical activity could have on the Australian community.
The Global Alliance was reaffirmed during the Sports, Medicine, and Health Summit held in Hamburg, Germany. The initiative has garnered support from major entities such as the International Olympic Committee and the World Health Organization, further underscoring its significance in promoting physical activity on a global scale.
