The Australian Golf Foundation’s Girls Golf Scholarship program at Bunbury Golf Club in Western Australia is making significant strides in promoting girls’ participation in golf. Now in its third year, the program has seen remarkable success, with five girls participating this year. Interestingly, many of these girls were introduced to golf by their fathers, who are members of the club, highlighting the crucial role of parental support in encouraging girls to pursue golf.
Lilli Andrew, a 2021 scholarship graduate, exemplifies the positive impact of the program. Initially inspired by the prevalence of golf among men and boys in her family, Lilli was determined to break the gender gap and become a skilled golfer herself. Her dedication paid off, as she graduated from the program at the age of 12 as a B-grade golfer. Recognized for her exceptional commitment, Lilli received a custom-fitted set of 14 Callaway and Odyssey golf clubs, generously donated by Callaway.
Only 18 months later, Lilli’s progress has been impressive, and she now boasts a handicap of seven at the age of 14. Peta Van Wyk, the junior coordinator at the club, is delighted to witness Lilli’s growth and enthusiasm for the sport. Lilli has become an inspiration for other girls in the program and is actively participating in events such as the WA Amateur and club championships.
Lilli’s influence extends beyond her family, as her younger sister, Bonni Andrew, followed in her footsteps and obtained a scholarship in 2022. The program continues to flourish this year, with two girls advancing from learning basic skills to playing on the course via the ‘Tiger’ tees, while others are soon to obtain a handicap. The AGF scholarship program has proven instrumental in fostering a sense of community among girls at the club and propelling their golf skills to new heights.
Applications for the 2024 AGF Scholarship club funding are set to open on August 18, 2023, and close on October 28, 2023. The Australian Golf Foundation, as the national foundation for golf in Australia, continues to support Golf Australia’s vision of growing the sport through targeted initiatives that inspire all Australians to enjoy and play golf.
